Gateway, North Catholic Claim Titles at 2025 WPIAL Boys’ Tennis Team Championships

Gateway won its second Class 3A title in three years, while North Catholic became a first-time WPIAL boys’ tennis team champion

Washington, Pa. – The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) completed its portion of the 2025 boys’ tennis season at the WPIAL/UPMC Sports Medicine Boys’ Tennis Team Championships this past Wednesday, May 7 at Janet L. Swanson Tennis Center on the campus of Washington & Jefferson College. In Class 3A, Gateway won its second WPIAL title in three seasons, while North Catholic is a first-time champion at Class 2A.

Gateway is now a three-time WPIAL boys’ tennis team champion, joining a group of 10 other schools with three titles. The Gators won their first in 1988 and then ended a 35-year wait with its 2023 championship.

With victories in the WPIAL singles (Adam Memije) and doubles (Zidaan Hassan, Logan Memije) tournaments earlier in the season, Gateway achieved a clean sweep of all three WPIAL boys’ tennis championships – marking the 12th time that has happened in league history. The Gators are the first to do it since Sewickley Academy did so in 2018, and the first at Class 3A to win all three since North Allegheny in 2001. Sewickley Academy has done it seven times (2004, 2008, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018), Greater Latrobe has accomplished it twice (1945, 1948), and Gateway joins Edgewood (1951) and North Allegheny (2001) as schools to do it once.

North Catholic is the 24 different school to win a WPIAL boys’ tennis team championship, and the first new champion since Indiana in 2019.

The top two teams in Class 3A and top three teams in Class 2A have qualified for the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Boys’ Tennis Team Championships, which begin with first round matches on Tuesday, May 13 and conclude with the remainder of the tournament on May 16-17 at Hershey Racquet Club.
