Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) and Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank are pleased to announce the results of the third annual WPIAL & Pittsburgh City League Food & Fund Drive, with six schools earning Community Champion plaudits after raising the most meals in their classification.
The six Community Champions are as follows: Armstrong (Class 5A), Redeemer Lutheran (Class 1A), Seneca Valley (Class 6A), Seton LaSalle (Class 3A), Southmoreland (Class 4A), and Winchester Thurston (Class 2A). Four of the schools – Armstrong, Redeemer Lutheran, Seneca Valley, Winchester Thurston – are repeat champions from last year, joining Knoch (2021, 2022) as two-time champions of their respective classifications.

The third annual WPIAL & Pittsburgh City League Food & Fund Drive raised a reported total of 65,433 meals. There were a total of 15 schools that provided over 1,000 meals each: Armstrong, Fort Cherry, Freeport, Hampton, Keystone Oaks, Knoch, Mohawk, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, Peters Township, Redeemer Lutheran, Seneca Valley, Seton LaSalle, South Fayette, and Winchester Thurston. Southmoreland collected a league-high 4,056 physical donations, while Winchester Thurston collected the most in monetary donations with $3,484.25.
Since 2021, the WPIAL and Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank partnered to hold an annual food drive with all of its and Pittsburgh City League (PIAA District VIII) schools. Schools are divided into six divisions by enrollment, and the schools tabulating the most “meals” (total between money donated and food collected) in each of those divisions are named Community Champions. In the three years of the Food & Fund Drive, WPIAL and Pittsburgh City League schools have raised a total of 247,165 meals for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.
Winning schools will be recognized with a Community Champion banner for their achievement either at the WPIAL Basketball Championships, or by having a Food Bank staff member present their banner at their school.
