Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) crowned its girls’ track & field team champions for the 2026 spring season this past Tuesday, May 5. In Class 3A, North Allegheny secured the title at West Mifflin High School, while North Catholic emerged as the Class 2A champion at Confluence Financial Partners Stadium at Peters Township Middle School.
GIRLS' CLASS 3A RECAP
North Allegheny returned to the top of the podium, capturing the WPIAL girls' team championship by sweeping its three opponents in the finals: Mount Lebanon (81-69), Norwin (89-61), and Hempfield Area (97-53).
The Tigers reached the finals after a dominant semifinal performance at home, where they defeated Chartiers Valley, Kiski Area, Plum, and Belle Vernon.
In the finals, North Allegheny's balance across all disciplines proved decisive:
- Track & Relays: Kendra Smith won the 100-meter dash (12.41), and Maya Currie took the 400-meter dash (59.12). Samantha Strelick secured first place in the 3,200-meter run (11:16.80).
- Field Events: The Tigers swept the throwing events, with Taylor Neese winning the shot put (40-05.50), Audrey Maxwell taking the discus (130-03), and Emma Neese winning the javelin (131-09). Avery Ruffus claimed the triple jump title (37-06.50), while Lindsay Breneman won the pole vault (11-03.00).
Mount Lebanon finished second overall, defeating Hempfield Area (82-68) and tying Norwin (75-75) in the final meet. The Blue Devils won the 4x100 (49.28) and 4x400 (4:00.09) relays. Norwin took third place, advancing to the finals via a semifinal total-points tie-breaker (329-309) over South Fayette. In the finals, the Knights defeated Hempfield Area 79-71.
GIRLS' CLASS 2A RECAP
North Catholic ascended to the top of Class 2A, claiming the girls' team championship by defeating Quaker Valley (77-73), Laurel (86-63), and Burrell (115-35) in a highly competitive final meet.
The Trojans reached the championship after a dominant semifinal at Shenango, where they swept Shenango, Freedom Area, and Hopewell.
North Catholic’s victory was built on strong performances in the sprints and hurdles:
- Track Events: Anna Lazzara won the 100-meter dash (12.59), and Audra Lazzara took the 100 - meter hurdles (15.37). Anjali de Silva swept the hurdles, winning both the 100-meter (15.22) and 300-meter (46.85) events.
- Relays: North Catholic secured first place in both the 4x100-meter (48.21) and 4x400-meter (4:05.20) relays.
Quaker Valley finished in second place with wins over Laurel (84-66) and Burrell (104-46). The Quakers were led by Lucy Montagnese, who won the 1,600-meter (5:24.16) and 3,200-meter (11:40.28) runs. Laurel took third place with a 89-61 victory over Burrell.
