Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) handed out its first team championships of the 2025 spring season this past Tuesday, May 6 at the WPIAL/UPMC Sports Medicine Girls’ Track & Field Team Championships, held at West Mifflin High School and Confluence Financial Partners Stadium on the campus of Peters Township Middle School. In Class 3A, Norwin won its first title since 2009, while Quaker Valley captured its fourth consecutive crown at Class 2A.
Quaker Valley joins the 10-time WPIAL girls’ track & field team champion club, and extends its current streak to four straight titles. The Quakers are third all-time, trailing just Butler (14) and North Allegheny (13), and have won in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025.
Norwin moves into sole possession of fifth all-time in WPIAL girls’ track & field team championships, with only the aforementioned Butler, North Allegheny, and Quaker Valley, and Hempfield Area (6) ahead of the Knights. This was Norwin’s first championship in 16 years, with their first four titles coming in repeat fashion from 2006 to 2009.
CLASS 3A RECAP
Norwin snapped a 16-year drought to win its fifth WPIAL girls’ track & field team championship, as it defeated North Allegheny (83-67), Butler (92.5-57.5), and South Fayette (107-43) for the Class 3A title at West Mifflin High School.
Norwin (12-0, 6-0 Section I) claimed the title with nine event wins, one second-place effort, and nine third-place finishes.
Brandi Brozeski brought home the Knights’ first win of the day in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.42 seconds, and later claimed victories in the triple jump (37-01.00) and high jump (5-02.50). Melani Schmidt was also a three-time individual winner with triumphs in the 100-meter dash (12.31), 200-meter dash (25.41), and 400-meter dash (56.73).
Annie Czajkowski captured first in the 800-meter run (2:20.70) and 1,600-meter run (5:06.00), while the duo of Addison Farrah and Jillian Ryba placed second and third in the 3,200-meter run with respective times of 11:30.14 and 11:32.55. The 4x400-relay team rounded out the meet with a winning time of 4:01.89, securing the championship.
North Allegheny (12-1, 6-0 Section III) garnered the runner-up trophy with dual meet wins over Butler (99.5-50.5) and South Fayette (107-43). The Tigers won five events, beginning with the 4x100-meter relay (50.96). Lindsey Breneman took home the pole vault after clearing 11-01.00, and North Allegheny swept the throwing events as Audrey Maxwell won discus (111-08.00), Taylor Neese took shot put (36-00.00), and Emma Neese led a top-three sweep of javelin with a toss of 114-07.00. Anna Fiffik (111-04.00) and Amara Daugherty (109-06.00) completed the Tigers triumvirate.
Butler (9-4, 4-2 Section III) defeated South Fayette (9-3, 6-0 Section VII) in its dual meet matchup, 92.5-57.5. The Golden Tornado won the 300-meter hurdles with Adraya Baxter’s time of 46.47 seconds, and the long jump with Aubrey Rock’s leap of 17-10.00.
The Lions opened the day with a victory in the 4x800-meter relay (9:23.39), and added a triumph in the 3,200-meter run as Angela Zang crossed the line in 11:06.25.
CLASS 2A RECAP
Quaker Valley continued its dominance of Class 2A, capturing its fourth consecutive WPIAL girls’ track & field team title with dual meet wins over Carlynton (97-53), Laurel (97-53), and North Catholic (101-49) from Confluence Financial Partners Stadium on the campus of Peters Township Middle School.
Quaker Valley (12-0, 6-0 Section III) brought home nine event victories, four runner-up finishes, and four third-place efforts to secure a fourth straight trophy.
Cecilia Montagnese claimed three of the Quakers’ nine event wins, sweeping the 800, 1,600, and 3,200-meter runs. Montagnese opened with a 5:10.65 time in the 1,600, followed by mark of 2:18.04 in the 800. In the 3,200-meter run, she crossed the line in 11:04.56, with Lucy Montagnese coming in second with a time of 11:28.69.
The Quakers won the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 48.98 seconds, and then brought home wins in four field events. Vanessa Pickett was victorious in the long jump (18-00.75), Joyce Olawaiye brought home the triple jump (37-05.75), Sarah Minard cleared the highest bar in the pole vault (9-02.00), and Mia Gartley and Oumou Thiero shared the high jump win after both got over the 5-00.50 mark.
North Catholic (13-1, 7-0 Section IV) defeated Laurel (75-73) and Carlynton (75-63) to bring home a runner-up finish. The Trojanettes were victorious in the 4x400-meter and 4x800-meter relays with respective times of 4:14.06 and 9:45.45, while Audra Lazzara took first in the 100-meter hurdles with a mark of 15.48 seconds.
Carlynton (12-3, 8-0 Section V) placed third after topping Laurel (10-3, 7-0 Section I), 77-72. The Cougars didn’t have a first-place finisher in any event, but Jordynn Carter placed second in the triple jump (36-08.00), and Hayleigh Loeffert claimed runner-up in the javelin (97-00.00).
The Spartans won six events on the day, highlighted by a sweep of the 100, 200, and 400-meter dashes by Tori Atkins. Atkins clocked in at 12.23 seconds for the 100, 24.77 seconds for the 200, and 56.04 seconds for the 400. Laurel also saw Alexis Geiwitz win the shot put (38-07.00), Amara McKissick take the discus (112-03.00), and Sophia Conti capture the javelin (102-10.00).
