Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) held its WPIAL/UPMC Sports Medicine Gymnastics Team & Individual Championships at Moon High School on Saturday afternoon.
Thomas Jefferson won the team championship for the second straight year and did so by posting their best final score since 2020 (142.784). The Jaguars will look to become the first team to win three straight titles since Moon from 2012-2014.
Oakland Catholic’s Madeline Wingerter won the WPIAL all-around championship in the Advanced division, which made the Eagles the 17th different school to produce an all-around winner at the top level.
TEAM RECAP
This is the fourth WPIAL team championship for Thomas Jefferson placing it in a group of three schools with at least four titles. The Jaguars are the first team to win back-to-back titles since Moon in 2022-2023 and now join the four-time winner club with North Allegheny (18), Moon (8), and Pine-Richland (4).
Thomas Jefferson captured the WPIAL team championship with a top score of 142.784, edging Central Valley which finished second with 140.903, while North Allegheny placed third with 140.992.
The Jaguars were powered by a balanced lineup led by Cam Noderer, Adam Wilson, and Victoria Coughenour, helping Thomas Jefferson post the day’s highest totals on vault and uneven bars. Central Valley relied on strong performances from Bria Zelesnik and Elise Nalli, recording the meet’s best beam rotation and floor exercise events.
North Allegheny rounded out the podium behind key routines from Hannah Seidl and Maeve Coltz Robinson, while Baldwin finished fourth with 135.733 and West Allegheny took fifth with 135.567. Hopewell completed the team standings in sixth with a score of 131.743.
ADVANCED DIVISION RECAP
Oakland Catholic’s Madeleine Wingerter won all-around gold in the Advanced division, posting a meet-best 37.145. Freeport’s Andie Ehalt secured silver with a 36.700, and Central Valley’s Bria Zelesnik took bronze with a 36.695 .
Ehalt delivered the top bars routine of the day, winning the event with a 9.675, while also finishing third on vault with a 9.600. Zelesnik earned gold on the balance beam with a 9.475, which was her best event of the day.
Thomas Jefferson’s Adam Wilson captured the vault championship with a 9.990. Mt. Pleasant’s Olivia Kovach rounded out the event winners, taking first in the floor exercise with a 9.475.
INTERMEDIATE I DIVISION RECAP
Hempfield’s Ava Hickman captured all-around gold in the Intermediate I division with a score of 35.950. West Allegheny’s Karley Naughton earned silver with a 35.267, while Thomas Jefferson’s Cam Noderer claimed bronze with a 35.242 .
Hickman highlighted her day with a first-place finish on the balance beam with a 9.325 and added a strong showing on uneven bars, placing third with an 8.925. Central Valley’s Peyton Davidson won the floor exercise with a 9.000, while Grace Christian’s Brielle Perry took gold on the uneven bars with a 9.050 .
North Allegheny’s Maeve Coltz Robinson claimed the vault title with a 9.250, and Naughton paired her all-around silver with a fourth place finish on beam (9.000). Noderer added top performances on bars and floor, placing seventh in both events to round out a consistent podium day.
INTERMEDIATE II DIVISION RECAP
Moon’s Gigi Baumgarten captured all-around gold in the Intermediate II division with a score of 34.200. Bethel Park’s Alivia Bogdon earned silver with a 33.925, while Beaver’s Peyton Teapole secured bronze with a 33.558.
Baumgarten also claimed first place on the uneven bars with an 8.375 and added a third-place finish in the floor exercise with an 8.525. She placed fifth in both the vault (8.800) and balance beam (8.550).
Bogdon’s top performances included third-place finishes on the uneven bars (8.200) and beam (8.575). Teapole highlighted her day with a first-place finish in the floor exercise and a 10th-place showing on the balance beam.
Rounding out the Intermediate II winners, Deer Lakes’ Alana Jeffrey took first in the vault with a 9.183, while Thomas Jefferson’s Maggie Handshue claimed gold on the balance beam with an 8.700.
