Moon Township, Pa. – The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) hosted its WPIAL/UPMC Sports Medicine Individual Championships at Moon High School this past Saturday. A total of 120 student-athletes competed across the three divisions (Advanced, Intermediate I, Intermediate II), with the day breaking up in two different sessions.
Baldwin’s Abby Rexrode captured a third consecutive WPIAL all-around title in the Advanced division, becoming the fourth different student-athlete to win three all-around golds. Rexrode joins Hopewell’s Kelly Burka (2010-12), and North Allegheny’s Jamie Davic (1993-95) and Angie Evans (1986-88) as the only three-time champions in league history, and is the fourth Baldwin student-athlete (Mary DeFrancesco, 1997-98; Dana Scanlon, 1992; Kim Calderone, 1983-84) to top the all-around podium.
ADVANCED DIVISION RECAP
Abby Rexrode of Baldwin won three of the four events to claim her third straight WPIAL all-around gold medal in the Advanced division, finishing with a total of 38.175 points to top runner-up Olivia Kovach of Mt. Pleasant by 0.725.
Rexrode took home gold in the vault (9.775), uneven bars (9.700), and floor exercise (9.700). She placed eighth in the balance beam with a tally of 9.000 points.
Kovach posted a score of 9.575 points in the balance beam to claim gold in the event. She also placed second in the uneven bars (9.500), seventh in the vault (9.375), and 11th in the floor exercise (9.000).
Oakland Catholic’s Madeliene Wingerter took the all-around bronze with a mark of 37.375 points. Wingerter finished second in the floor exercise (9.550), third in the uneven bars (9.425), sixth in the vault (9.425), and 10th in the balance beam (8.975).
Also receiving medals for all-around on the six-person podium were fourth-place Nadia Constantakis of Pine-Richland (37.075), fifth-place Hayley Bates of Moon (36.700), and sixth-place Adriana Seese of North Allegheny (36.675).
There was a total of 19 competitors in the Advanced division from nine different schools (Baldwin, Hampton, Moon, Mt. Pleasant, North Allegheny, North Hills, Oakland Catholic, Pine-Richland, Thomas Jefferson).
INTERMEDIATE I DIVISION RECAP
West Allegheny’s Macey McKinney was the gold medalist in the all-around for the Intermediate I division, registering a score of 35.325. North Catholic’s Abby Getch placed second with a mark of 35.250, and West Allegheny’s Juliana Carbone finished third with a score of 35.225.
McKinney won the balance beam with a tally of 8.850 and fourth in the uneven bars (8.825). She also scored finishes of fifth in the floor exercise (8.975) and 21st in the vault (8.675).
Getch won the vault (9.250) and finished second in the balance beam (8.750). Carbone’s best finish was sixth in the balance beam (8.600) and placed seventh in the other three events.
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart’s Jordyn Kunselman took gold in the uneven bars with a score of 9.250.
There was a total of 37 competitors in the Intermediate I division from 18 different schools (Baldwin, Beaver, Bethel Park, Central Valley, Greensburg Salem, Hopewell, Moon, North Allegheny, North Catholic, North Hills, Norwin, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, South Side, Southmoreland, Saint Joseph, Thomas Jefferson, West Allegheny, Western Beaver).
INTERMEDIATE II DIVISION RECAP
A runner-up and two other top-10 efforts lifted Hopewell’s Marina Pinchotti to the all-around gold in the Intermediate II division with a score of 33.725. She was followed by Beaver’s Peyton Teapole (33.450) and Hempfield Area’s Ava Hickman (33.425) on the leaderboard.
Pinchotti scored 8.375 in the balance beam to place second, and added finishes of seventh in the uneven bars (8.300) and ninth in the floor exercise (8.550). She finished 28th in the vault with a score of 8.500.
Teapole won the floor exercise with a score of 8.925, while Hickman took home gold in the uneven bars (8.650).
North Allegheny’s Sierra Dickert registered the division’s tops core in the vault with a 9.050, and West Allegheny’s Addyson Figley led the balance beam with 8.400.
There was a total of 64 competitors in the Intermediate II division from 26 different schools (Baldwin, Beaver, Burrell, Central Valley, Chartiers Valley, Deer Lakes, Fox Chapel, Franklin Regional, Frazier, Greensburg Central Catholic, Greensburg Salem, Hempfield Area, Hopewell, Indiana, Lincoln Park, Montour, Moon, North Allegheny, North Hills, Norwin, Pine-Richland, Southmoreland, Sto-Rox, Thomas Jefferson, West Allegheny, Western Beaver).
