Moon Township, Pa. – The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) held its WPIAL/UPMC Sports Medicine Gymnastics Team Championships at Moon High School this past Friday night. Six teams competed for the gold, with Pine-Richland emerging as the champion as its score of 148.608 topped runner-up Moon by 4.441 points.
This is the first WPIAL team title for Pine-Richland (7-0, 6-0 Section I) in 15 years, and its fourth overall. The Rams were also victorious in 2003, 2006, and 2009, and now sit in sole possession of third place all-time behind North Allegheny (18) and Moon (8).
Pine-Richland won both the uneven bars (37.425) and balance beam (36.725), while also finishing second in the vault (37.625) and third in the floor exercise (36.833). Ana Constantakis and Allison Kapanowski led the way in the uneven bars with respective scores of 9.775 and 9.725, while Annamaria Samuels carded the team’s top mark in the balance beam at 9.300.
Moon (8-0, 6-0 Section II) finished as the overall runner-up with a score of 144.167. The Tigers finished second in the uneven bars (35.275) and floor exercise (36.917), and third in the vault (37.250) and balance beam (34.725). Baldwin (7-1, 5-1 Section I) won the floor exercise (37.000) and placed third overall (143.975), while North Allegheny (6-2, 4-2 Section I) topped the field in the vault (37.825) and finished fourth (143.051) in the six-team field.
West Allegheny (5-3, 4-2 Section II) and Central Valley (5-2, 5-1 Section II) rounded out the running order in fifth and sixth, respectively. The Indians finished with 138.466 points, while the Warriors scored 136.416 points.
The top individual scores in each event were North Allegheny’s Adriana Seese in vault with 9.575, Pine-Richland’s Ana Constantakis in uneven bars with 9.775, Moon’s Hayley Bates in balance beam with 9.500, and Baldwin’s Abby Rexrode in floor exercise with 9.667.
