Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) set its seedings for the WPIAL/UPMC Sports Medicine Class 3A Boys’ Wrestling Individual Championships presented by Pennsylvania Laborers’ Union on Monday afternoon. The championship tournaments will be held on March 1-2 at Canon-McMillan High School. This tournament also serves as the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Class 3A Southwest Regional.
A total of 234 student-athletes across 36 different schools are set to compete at the WPIAL Class 3A Boys’ Wrestling Individual Championships. Student-athletes qualified by finishing inside the top six of their weight class at their respective sectional tournament. Representing schools include Armstrong, Baldwin, Bethel Park, Butler, Canon-McMillan, Central Catholic, Chartiers Valley, Connellsville, Fox Chapel, Franklin Regional, Gateway, Greater Latrobe, Hempfield Area, Kiski Area, Mars, McKeesport, Moon, Mt. Lebanon, North Allegheny, North Hills, Norwin, Penn Hills, Penn-Trafford, Peters Township, Pine-Richland, Plum, Ringgold, Seneca Valley, Shaler, South Fayette, Thomas Jefferson, Trinity, Upper St. Clair, Waynesburg Central, West Allegheny, and West Mifflin.
The Eastern Sectional was held at Norwin High School and made up of student-athletes from schools in Section III and Section IV. Sectional champions were: Connellsville freshman Nolan Rice (107), Norwin freshman Landen Sidun (114), Greater Latrobe junior Luke Willochell (121), Greater Latrobe senior Jake Braun (127), Connellsville freshman Kai Vielma (133), Thomas Jefferson junior Maddox Shaw (139), Connellsville junior Evan Petrovich (145), Hempfield Area senior Eli Carr (152), Thomas Jefferson junior Bode Marlow (160), Greater Latrobe freshman Hunter Snyder (172), Norwin senior Nathan Campbell (189), Franklin Regional senior Juliano Marion (215), and Thomas Jefferson junior Shepherd Turk (285).
The Northern Sectional was held at Kiski Area High School and made up of student-athletes from schools in Section I and Section II. Sectional champions were: North Allegheny freshman Evan Schomburg (107), Butler sophomore Santino Sloboda (114), Seneca Valley senior Connor Smith (121), Plum senior Rylen Campbell (127), Butler junior Kase Chopp (133), Pine-Richland junior Dominic Ferraro (139), Mars junior Liam Hein (145), Plum senior Antonino Walker (152), Pine-Richland sophomore Maclane Miller (160), Pine-Richland junior Vaughn Spencer (172), Kiski Area sophomore Cooper Roscosky (189), Kiski Area sophomore Abrahm Taylor (215), and Armstrong sophomore Phiup Rearick (285).
The Southern Sectional was held at South Fayette High School and made up of student-athletes from schools in Section V and Section VI. Sectional champions were: Peters Township freshman Nicholas McGarrity (107), West Allegheny senior Caiden Harbert (114), Trinity sophomore Dom Canali (121), Canon-McMillan senior Andrew Binni (127), Bethel Park senior Mason Hernan (133), Trinity senior Blake Reihner (139), Bethel Park junior Ethan Higgins (145), West Allegheny senior Nick Jones (152), Baldwin senior Keith Mincin (160), Trinity senior Bode Morgan (172), Trinity senior Robbie Allison (189), Canon-McMillan senior Geno Calgaro (215), and Waynesburg Central sophomore Roan Tustin (285).
The top four finishers in each of the 13 weight classes will move onto the PIAA Wrestling Individual Championships, which will be held on March 7-9 at the GIANT Center in Hershey.
