Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) set its brackets for the WPIAL/UPMC Sports Medicine Wrestling Team Championships on Thursday, with 40 teams qualifying by finishing inside the top two of their section or by receiving an at-large bid.
Teams competed in nine different sections in both Class 2A and Class 3A, and faced each of their section opponents once.
The Class 3A section champions are West Allegheny (12-10) in Section I, Trinity (6-2, 4-0) in Section II, Bethel Park (9-1, 4-0) in Section III, North Allegheny (14-2, 4-0) in Section IV, Kiski Area (13-4, 4-0) in Section V, North Hills (8-3, 3-0) in Section VI, Thomas Jefferson (9-0, 4-0) in Section VII, Connellsville (5-1, 3-0) in Section VIII, and Franklin Regional (13-0, 4-0) in Section IX.
In Class 2A, the section champions are McGuffey (13-4, 3-0) in Section I, Burgettstown (6-2, 2-0) in Section II, Laurel (16-3, 4-0) in Section IV, Freedom Area (11-2, 3-0) in Section V, Quaker Valley (10-4, 3-0) in Section VI, Southmoreland (7-6, 4-0) in Section VII, Derry (15-2, 3-0) in Section VIII, and Burrell (10-1, 4-0) in Section IX. There was a three-way tie in Section III between Bentworth (6-6, 3-1), Bethlehem-Center (6-7, 3-1), and Jefferson-Morgan (9-3, 3-1).
Last season, Connellsville narrowly defeated Trinity, 33-32, in the Class 3A championship match, while Burrell won 41-20 over Burgettstown to take the Class 2A crown.
The WPIAL/UPMC Sports Medicine Wrestling Team Championships begin on Monday, Jan. 27 with preliminary round matches. First round and quarterfinal matches will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 29, with the final four in both Class 2A and Class 3A set to compete in semifinal, championship, and third-place consolation bouts on Saturday, Feb. 1 at AHN Arena on the campus of Peters Township High School. The top three teams in Class 3A and top four teams in Class 2A will move onto the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Wrestling Team Championships, which begin with preliminary round matches on Tuesday, Feb. 4 and conclude with the remainder of the tournament on Feb. 7-8 at Altoona High School.

BY THE NUMBERS
- 89: The number of seasons the WPIAL has crowned a wrestling team champion. Canonsburg was the first in 1936.
- 44: The number of seasons the WPIAL wrestling team champion was determined by points at the WPIAL Individual Championships. The first schools to win via championship match were Trinity and Waynesburg Central in 1979. Trinity topped Mt. Lebanon, 25-18, to win Class 3A, while Waynesburg Central bested McGuffey, 29-23, for the Class 2A trophy.
- 29: The number of schools who have boasted at least one WPIAL wrestling team champion.
- 26: The number of teams in the 2025 fields that qualified for the WPIAL Wrestling Team Championships last season.

- 2: The number of seasons it has been since a first-time WPIAL wrestling team champion was crowned. Quaker Valley was the last to do so in 2022 after beating Burrell, 30-28.
