WPIAL Releases Fall Sports Alignments for 2024 and 2025 Seasons

Sections were revealed for cross country, field hockey, football, golf, soccer, girls’ tennis, and girls’ volleyball

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) announced its fall sports alignments for the 2024 and 2025 seasons after the proposals were approved by the WPIAL Board of Directors at their monthly meeting on Monday afternoon.
 
Alignments determine the sections that each school will compete in per their Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) classification. The fall sports that the WPIAL sponsors are cross country (boys’ and girls’), field hockey, football, golf (boys’ and girls’), soccer (boys’ and girls’), tennis (girls’), and volleyball (girls’).
 
Cross country will have 109 boys’ teams and 109 girls’ teams competing in section play across two divisions. Division I has six sections and a total of 52 boys’ teams and 52 girls’ teams, and Division II has five sections and a total of 57 boys’ teams and 57 girls’ teams. Schools will compete in the WPIAL Cross Country Championships as per their listed classification.
 
Field hockey will have 14 teams competing in section play across three classifications. Class 3A has a section of four teams, and both Class 2A and Class 1A have sections of five teams.
 
Football will have 117 teams competing in section play across six classifications. Class 6A has one section of eight teams, Class 5A and Class 3A have 20 teams competing in three sections, Class 4A has 17 teams competing in three sections, Class 2A has 22 teams competing in three sections, and Class 1A has 30 teams competing in four sections.
 
Boys’ golf will have 111 teams competing in section play across two classifications. Class 3A has 49 teams competing in seven sections, and Class 2A has 62 teams competing in nine sections.
 
Girls’ golf will have 39 teams competing in section play across two classifications. Class 3A has 26 teams competing in four sections, and Class 2A has 13 teams competing in two sections.
 
Boys’ soccer will have 107 teams competing in section play across four classifications. Class 4A has 18 teams competing in three sections, Class 3A has 31 teams competing in four sections, Class 2A has 33 teams competing in four sections, and Class 1A has 25 teams competing in four sections.
 
Girls’ soccer will have 107 teams competing in section play across four classifications. Class 4A has 18 teams competing in three sections, Class 3A has 28 teams competing in four sections, Class 2A has 33 teams competing in four sections, and Class 1A has 28 teams competing in four sections.
 
Girls’ tennis will have 75 teams competing in section play across two classifications. Class 3A has 36 teams competing in four sections, and Class 2A has 39 teams competing in five sections.
 
Girls’ volleyball will have 126 teams competing in section play across four classifications. Class 4A has 24 teams competing in four sections, Class 3A has 33 teams competing in five sections, Class 2A has 39 teams competing in five sections, and Class 1A has 30 teams competing in five sections.

Tentative release dates for each sport’s section schedules are listed below:
  • Tuesday, Feb. 27: Boys’ Soccer, Girls’ Soccer
  • Thursday, Feb. 29: Girls’ Tennis, Boys’ Cross Country, Girls’ Cross Country
  • Tuesday, March 5: Girls’ Volleyball
  • Thursday, March 7: Boys’ Golf, Girls’ Golf
  • Tuesday, March 12: Field Hockey
  • Thursday, March 14: Football

Founded in 1906, the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) represents Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) District VII, which is one of the 12 districts governed by the Constitution and By-Laws of the PIAA.
