WPIAL Sets 2025 Boys’ Tennis Doubles Championships Brackets

Gateway’s Zidaan Hassan and Logan Memije (Class 3A) and South Park’s Jonah Jasek and Steven Duing (Class 2A) are the top seeds in their respective classifications

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) announced its brackets for the WPIAL/UPMC Sports Medicine Boys’ Tennis Doubles Championships on Thursday, with 64 student-athletes qualifying through section tournaments held on April 15-16.
 
Student-athletes competed in four different sections in both Class 2A and Class 3A. The top four finishing student-athletes in each section earned qualification to the WPIAL Doubles Championships.
 
The Class 3A field features five past top-four finishers, highlighted by the reigning champions in Gateway senior Zidaan Hassan and junior Logan Memije. Hassan is seeking his third WPIAL doubles gold medal after winning in 2023 with Adam Memije. Upper St. Clair senior Ari Plutko finished runner-up in 2024 and third in 2023 with Ronan Gibbons as his partner, while Franklin Regional sophomore Colin Stalnaker took bronze last year with Dhruv Kulkarni. Fox Chapel senior Mason Friday placed fourth in 2023 with Cooper Friday.
 
In Class 2A, Montour junior Jonah Camardese captured gold last year with John Rohrkaste. The South Park junior duo of Jonah Jasek and Steven Duing were bronze medalists in 2023, while Valley senior Landon Harclerode placed fourth that year with Nicholas Bussard.
 
There are 11 student-athletes who are returning qualifiers in the Class 3A bracket, with the aforementioned five joined by Butler senior Andrew Bocci, Mt. Lebanon sophomore Luca Ritivoi, North Allegheny junior Adhav Ramadas and sophomore Shivum Telang, Peters Township senior Kritin Sharma, and Shady Side Academy senior Sai Chaudhry. Friday, Hassan, Memije, and Plutko will each be making their third appearances.
 
The Class 2A draw also has 11 returning student-athletes, with Camardese, Duing, Harclerode, and Jasek joined by Beaver senior Zack Masters, Blackhawk junior Ben Crefeld, Indiana senior Gabe Nettleton, Mt. Pleasant senior Ayden Gross, North Catholic senior Alex Lopez Foubert and junior Alex Weber, and Valley junior Tyler Quinn. Duing, Harclerode, and Weber are now three-time WPIAL qualifiers, while the duos of Harclerode and Quinn as well as Lopez Foubert and Weber competed together in last year’s tournament.
 
Class 3A saw the following section champions: Gateway’s Hassan and Memije (Section I), Fox Chapel’s Friday and freshman Frank Siegel (Section III), Mt. Lebanon’s Ritivoi and senior Mark Summers (Section IV), and North Allegheny’s Ramadas and senior Nick Scheuring (Section II). In Class 2A, the section champions were: Central Valley juniors Cody Clayton and Hunter Hazelwood (Section IV), North Catholic’s Weber and Lopez Foubert (Section IV), South Park’s Jasek and Duing (Section II), and Valley’s Harclerode and Quinn (Section I).
 
Last season, Gateway’s Hassan and Memije won Class 3A in three sets (4-6, 6-1, 6-4) over Upper St. Clair’s Plutko and Ronan Gibbons, while Montour’s Camardese teamed up with John Rohrkaste to defeat Sewickley Academy’s Jackson Quigley and Tejas Mitra, 7-5, 7-5.
 
The WPIAL/UPMC Sports Medicine Boys’ Tennis Doubles Championships will be held on April 22-23. The first round through semifinals will be held at Bethel Park High School and North Allegheny High School (Class 2A only) on Tuesday, April 22, and all finals and consolation finals will be held at Bethel Park on Wednesday, April 23. The top two finishers in Class 3A and top three finishing teams in Class 2A will move onto the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Boys’ Tennis Doubles Championships, which will be held on May 23-24 at Hershey Racquet Club.

Lebanon duo Dan Hersh and John Nichols won together in 1998, 1999, and 2000, Sewickley Academy’s Will Kleeman won in 2011, 2012, and 2013, and Shady Side Academy’s Chris Grubbs claimed gold in 2012, 2013, and 2014. Gateway senior Zidaan Hassan could join that group with a win in 2025 after capturing the title in 2023 and 2024.
  • 1: The number of student-athletes to win four WPIAL boys’ tennis doubles championships. Sewickley Academy’s Ryan Gex accomplished this perfect run from 2014 to 2017, winning with Luke Vith in 2014, then pairing with Don Gex in 2015 and 2016, before completing the four-peat with Neil Rana in 2017. Gex’s run highlighted a streak of nine consecutive seasons in which Sewickley Academy student-athletes won the WPIAL Boys’ Tennis Doubles Championships.
