PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) crowned three champions at the WPIAL/UPMC Sports Medicine Field Hockey Championships on Tuesday, Oct. 28, and Wednesday, Oct. 29, at North Allegheny’s Newman Stadium.
Pine-Richland captured its seventh consecutive WPIAL field hockey championship and eighth overall, moving into fifth place on the all-time championship list.
Fox Chapel returned to championship form, earning its first WPIAL title since 2016 — and its first since joining the Class 2A classification.
Shady Side Academy claimed its third straight championship for the first time since 2019–21, tying North Allegheny for the most field hockey titles in WPIAL history with 22.
CLASS 3A RECAP
Top-seeded Pine-Richland secured its seventh consecutive Class 3A crown with a 2-0 victory over No. 3 North Allegheny in the first game at Newman Stadium on Tuesday.
Junior midfielder Claire Mill led the way for the Rams, opening the scoring before adding an insurance goal in the fourth quarter.
Pine-Richland advanced to the title game with an 11-0 semifinal win over No. 4 Norwin, while North Allegheny defeated Mt. Lebanon, 2-1 (OT), in its semifinal matchup.
CLASS 2A RECAP
No. 2 Fox Chapel ended a nine-year championship drought, defeating top-seeded Peters Township, 2-0, to capture the Class 2A title on Wednesday.
Melanie Pietz opened the scoring in the first quarter, capitalizing on a rebound in front of the net. Later in the half, Catelyn Pastoor doubled the lead with a putback of her own rebound, securing the Foxes’ sixth championship in program history.
Fox Chapel reached the final with a 2-0 semifinal win over No. 3 Greater Latrobe, recording shutouts in both postseason contests.
Peters Township advanced with a 1-0 semifinal victory over No. 4 Upper St. Clair before falling to Fox Chapel in the title match.
CLASS 1A RECAP
Top-seeded Shady Side Academy successfully defended its Class 1A title, defeating No. 2 Aquinas Academy, 1-0 — the same score as last year’s championship matchup.
After a scoreless first half, sophomore Harley Tomasi broke the deadlock in the third quarter with the eventual game-winner, clinching the Bulldogs’ record-tying 22nd WPIAL title.
Shady Side Academy advanced to the final with a 7-0 semifinal victory over No. 4 Winchester Thurston, while Aquinas Academy reached its fifth straight championship game with a 1-0 overtime win against The Ellis School as the No. 3 seed.
