WPIAL Sets 2024 Field Hockey Championships Brackets

Pine-Richland (Class 3A), Peters Township (Class 2A), and Shady Side Academy (Class 1A) are the top seeds in their respective brackets

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) announced its brackets for the WPIAL/UPMC Sports Medicine Field Hockey Championships on Monday, with 12 teams qualifying by finishing inside the top four of their respective sections, including ties, following the regular seasons.
 
Teams competed in a section per classification for Class 1A, Class 2A, and Class 3A, and played each of their section opponents three times.
 
Pine-Richland (18-0-0, 12-0-0) captured its sixth consecutive section title at Class 3A, while in Class 2A, Peters Township (14-3-0, 11-1-0) is a section champion for the first time since 2018. Shady Side Academy (13-4-0, 11-1-0) made it two straight section championships at Class 1A and nine in the last 10 seasons.
 
Last season, Pine-Richland won its fifth straight Class 3A crown with a 1-0 overtime triumph over Peters Township, Penn-Trafford made it eight straight at Class 2A with a 4-0 victory against Fox Chapel, and Shady Side Academy defeated Aquinas Academy in double overtime, 3-2, to win its fifth Class 1A championship in six seasons.
 
The WPIAL/UPMC Sports Medicine Field Hockey Championships begin on Wednesday, Oct. 23 with both semifinal games in Class 1A and one semifinal in Class 2A. Championship games will be played on Saturday, Nov. 2 at Cameron Stadium on the campus of Washington & Jefferson College. The WPIAL champion in each classification will move onto the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Field Hockey Championships, which begin with first round games on Tuesday, Nov. 5 and all championship games are held on Saturday, Nov. 16 at Cumberland Valley High School.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • 49: The number of seasons the WPIAL has crowned a girls’ volleyball champion. Fox Chapel was the first in 1974.
  • 22: The number of WPIAL field hockey championships won by North Allegheny, a league record. The Tigers won in 1982, 1983, 1984, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2013, and 2014.
  • 14: The number of schools who have boasted at least one WPIAL field hockey champion.
  • 13: The number of seasons that have passed since a school won its first WPIAL field hockey championship in school history. The last school to accomplish this was Penn-Trafford in 2011 with a 3-0 win over North Allegheny in the Class 3A final. The schools that could end that streak this year are Aquinas Academy, Greater Latrobe, Oakland Catholic, and Winchester Thurston.
  • 10: The number of teams in the 2024 fields that qualified for the WPIAL Field Hockey Championships last season.
  • 9: The longest streak of consecutive WPIAL field hockey championships, accomplished by Vincentian Academy. The Royals started their run in 1984 with the Class 2A title, winning all but two at that classification until 1992. Vincentian also won the Class 3A championships in 1986 and 1987.
  • 8: The longest active streak of consecutive WPIAL field hockey titles, held by Penn-Trafford. The Warriors have dominated Class 2A for nearly a decade’s worth of seasons, raising the trophy in every season since 2016.
