Sewickley, Pa. – The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) crowned its newest champions at the WPIAL/UPMC Sports Medicine Girls' Golf Individual Championships, held on Tuesday afternoon.
Senior Mya Morgan became the 11th different student-athlete to win the WPIAL Championship twice in girls’ golf. Morgan remains the lone golfer from Elizabeth Forward to win the WPIAL title, having first claimed the crown during her sophomore year in 2023. She reclaimed the top spot this year after finishing in second place during last year’s final.
Shady Side Academy sophomore Alyssa Zhang returned to defend her title and became the first girls’ golfer in school history to repeat as a WPIAL champion. Zhang improved on her score from last year’s finals, finishing with a (+6) compared to last year’s (+11).
CLASS 3A RECAP
Courses: Seven Oaks Country Club (Round 1) & Sewickley Heights Golf Club (Round 2)
Elizabeth Forward senior Mya Morgan had an outstanding first round, shooting a 69 (-3) to take a commanding lead into the finals. She followed it up with a 75 (+3) on day two, finishing seven strokes ahead of the silver medalist. Morgan now looks to become the first WPIAL girls’ golfer to repeat as state champion since Olivia Zambruno, who won three straight titles from 2014–2016.
Peters Township sophomore Betty Glyptis was the best performer on day two, shooting a 74 (+2) on Tuesday to vault into second place. Glyptis recorded four birdies and 21 pars and now heads to the state championships for the second straight year.
Another Peters Township standout, senior Ellie Benson, rounded out the top three. Benson shot a 74 (+2) in the first round and an 81 (+9) in the final round, finishing with three birdies. She will join teammate Glyptis at states.
CLASS 2A RECAP
Courses: Hill Crest Country Club (Round 1) & Sewickley Heights Golf Club (Round 2)
Shady Side Academy senior Alyssa Zhang shot a 73 (+1) on day one and followed it with a 78 (+6) on day two to win the Class 2A title by six strokes, finishing with a 36-hole score of 151 (+7). Zhang, the first individual repeat champion in Shady Side history, carded two birdies and 10 pars in the first round and added two more birdies and 18 pars in the tournament overall.
Chartiers Houston sophomore JoJo Jaskulski claimed the silver medal after earning bronze last year. She finished with a two-day total of 157 (+13), recording one birdie and 23 total pars.
Greensburg Central junior Kennedy Kelly improved in round two, shooting an 81 (+9) on Tuesday. Kelly recorded one birdie and totaled 18 pars across the tournament.
This marks the third appearance at the PIAA Girls' Golf Individual Championships for Kelly, and the second straight appearance for both Zhang and Jaskulski.
