WPIAL Releases Spring Sports Alignments for 2025 and 2026 Seasons

Sections were revealed for baseball, lacrosse, softball, boys’ tennis, track & field, and boys’ volleyball

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) announced its spring sports alignments for the 2025 and 2026 seasons after the proposals were approved by the WPIAL Board of Directors at their monthly meeting on Monday afternoon.
 
Alignments determine the sections that each school will compete in per their Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) classification. The spring sports that the WPIAL sponsors are baseball, lacrosse (boys’ and girls’), softball, boys’ tennis, track & field (boys’ and girls’), and boys’ volleyball.
 
Baseball has 124 teams competing in six classifications. Class 6A has two sections of five teams each, while Class 5A and Class 3A will be four-section classifications with 28 and 26 teams, respectively. Class 4A has 20 teams competing in three sections, Class 2A has 21 teams across three sections, and Class 1A has 22 teams competing in three sections.
 
Boys’ lacrosse has 38 teams competing in two classifications. Class 3A has seven teams in each of its two sections, while Class 2A is made up of two 12-team sections.
 
Girls’ lacrosse has 43 teams competing in two classifications. Class 3A has 21 teams across two sections, and Class 2A has two 11-team sections competing.
 
Softball has 119 teams competing in six classifications. Class 6A is a single nine-team section, while Class 5A and Class 2A are four-section classifications respectively made up of 27 and 25 teams. Class 4A has 21 teams across three sections, Class 3A has 18 teams competing in three sections, and Class 1A has 19 teams across three sections.
 
Boys’ tennis has 62 teams competing in two classifications. Both classifications consist of four sections, with Class 3A having 33 teams and Class 2A having 29.
 
Boys’ track & field has 121 teams competing in two classifications. Class 3A features eight sections with 56 teams and Class 2A has eight sections with 65 teams. One Class 2A team will compete in a Class 3A section.
 
Girls’ track & field has 122 teams competing in two classifications. Class 3A has 56 teams across eight sections and Class 2A has 66 teams competing in eight sections.
 
Boys’ volleyball has 45 teams competing in two classifications. Both Class 3A and Class 2A are made up of four sections, with Class 3A having 23 teams and Class 2A consisting of 22.

Tentative release dates for each sport’s section schedule are listed below:
  • Monday, August 26: Softball, Boys’ Volleyball
  • Tuesday, August 27: Baseball, Boys’ Tennis
  • Wednesday, August 28: Boys’ Lacrosse, Girls’ Lacrosse
  • Thursday, August 29: Boys’ Track & Field, Girls’ Track & Field

Founded in 1906, the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) represents Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) District VII, which is one of the 12 districts governed by the Constitution and By-Laws of the PIAA.
