WPIAL Reveals 2024 Girls’ Tennis Team Championships Brackets

Mt. Lebanon (Class 3A) and North Catholic (Class 2A) are the top seeds in their respective tournaments

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) announced its brackets for the WPIAL/UPMC Sports Medicine Girls’ Tennis Team Championships on Thursday, with 33 teams qualifying by finishing inside the top three or four of their respective sections following the regular season.
 
Teams competed in four different sections in Class 3A and five different sections in Class 2A, and played each of their section opponents once. In Class 3A, Baldwin claimed the final spot from Section III as Allderdice will compete in its own district postseason.
 
The Class 3A section champions were Franklin Regional (8-3, 8-0) in Section I, North Allegheny (11-4, 8-0) in Section II, Shady Side Academy (11-1, 7-0) in Section III, and Mt. Lebanon (11-0, 8-0) in Section IV. This is North Allegheny’s fourth consecutive section title, while it’s the third straight for both Franklin Regional and Shady Side Academy.
 
Emerging as section champions in Class 2A were Mt. Pleasant (9-3, 7-0) in Section I, Oakland Catholic (8-4, 7-0) in Section II, North Catholic (13-1, 6-0) in Section III, Beaver (7-2, 7-0) in Section IV, and Quaker Valley (10-1, 6-0) in Section V. This is the second straight section crown for Quaker Valley, while it’s the first since 2011 for Mt. Pleasant and the first since 2005 for Oakland Catholic.
 
Last season, Bethel Park defeated North Allegheny, 5-0, in the Class 3A final to win its first WPIAL girls’ tennis team championship, while Knoch made it three in four years at Class 2A with a 3-2 victory over Sewickley Academy.
 
The WPIAL/UPMC Sports Medicine Girls’ Tennis Team Championships begin on Monday, Oct. 7 with first round matches in Class 3A and a preliminary round match in Class 2A. Championship matches are scheduled to be played on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at the Janet L. Swanson Tennis Center on the campus of Washington & Jefferson College. The top three teams in both classifications will move onto the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Girls’ Tennis Team Championships, which begin with first round matches on Tuesday, Oct. 22, with the remainder of the tournament held on Oct. 25-26 at Hershey Racquet Club.

  • 7: The number of consecutive seasons that Knoch and Sewickley Academy played each other in the Class 2A final. The Knights and Panthers clashed in each championship match from 2017 to 2023, with Sewickley Academy holding the slightest 4-3 edge.
  • 2: The number of times that WPIAL girls’ tennis co-champions were declared. In 1993, Beaver and Mt. Pleasant shared the Class 2A title, while two years earlier, both Mt. Lebanon and Upper St. Clair were named WPIAL girls’ tennis team champions.
