WPIAL Sets 2024 Boys’ Golf Team Championships Fields

A total of 34 teams between two classifications qualified for the semifinals of the WPIAL Championships

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) set its semifinal pairings for the WPIAL/UPMC Sports Medicine Boys’ Golf Team Championships on Wednesday, with 34 teams qualifying by finishing inside the top two, including ties, of their respective sections following the regular season.
 
Teams competed in seven different sections in Class 3A and nine different sections in Class 2A, and played each of their section opponents twice. Both classifications will hold a pair of semifinal rounds, and the top three teams from those semifinals will advance to the championship round.
 
Emerging as section champions in Class 3A include Greater Latrobe (13-1, 11-1) in Section I, Belle Vernon (14-0, 12-0) in Section II, North Allegheny (16-3, 11-1) in Section III, Peters Township (14-0, 12-0) in Section V, South Fayette (12-1, 11-1) in Section VI, and Fox Chapel (16-1, 10-0) in Section VII. There was a three-way tie for the Section IV title between Central Catholic (12-3, 10-2), Franklin Regional (10-4, 10-2), and Plum (13-2, 10-2). Central Catholic holds the longest active streak for winning or sharing a section title in Class 3A at five straight seasons.
 
In Class 2A, outright section champions were Freeport (14-2, 12-0) in Section I, Greensburg Central Catholic (13-1, 12-0) in Section II, McGuffey (15-1, 12-0) in Section III, Ellwood City (15-0, 12-0) in Section V), Shady Side Academy (13-3, 11-1) in Section VIII, and North Catholic (8-4, 8-2) in Section IX. There were three shared section titles between Avonworth (12-1, 11-1) and Keystone Oaks (13-2, 11-1) in Section IV, Beaver (13-3, 11-1) and South Side (11-3, 11-1) in Section VI, and Bishop Canevin (11-1, 11-1) and Brentwood (11-1, 11-1) in Section VII. South Side’s shared section crown marks the sixth consecutive year the Rams have won or shared their section, which is the longest active streak in Class 2A.
 
Last season, Peters Township carded a 371 (+11) to win its first WPIAL title since 2015, topping Butler in Class 3A by seven strokes. Belle Vernon – who will be competing for the Class 3A crown this year – won Class 2A in 2023 with a score of 417 (+57), five strokes better than runner-up Neshannock.
 
The WPIAL/UPMC Sports Medicine Boys’ Golf Team Championships begin on Tuesday, Oct. 8 with semifinals at Champion Lakes Golf Course, Indian Run Golf Club, The Links at Spring Church, and Pleasant Valley Golf Club. Both classifications will crown their champions on Thursday, Oct. 10 at Cedarbrook Gold Golf Course. The two WPIAL champions will move onto the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Boys’ Golf Team Championships, which will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at Penn State Golf Courses.

  • 8: The longest streak of consecutive WPIAL boys’ golf team championships, which was accomplished by Sewickley Academy. The Panthers’ record lasted from 2013 to 2020 – all in Class 2A.
  • 1: The number of times since 1997 that a playoff was needed to determine the WPIAL boys’ golf team champion. In 2022, Sewickley Academy defeated Belle Vernon in a one-hole playoff, 21-22, to claim the Class 2A title after both teams recorded totals of 411 (+51).
