WPIAL Reveals 2023 Girls’ Volleyball Championships Brackets

North Allegheny (4A), Hampton (3A), Freeport (2A), and Serra Catholic (1A) are the top seeds in their classifications

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) established its playoff brackets in four classifications for the 2023 WPIAL/UPMC Sports Medicine Girls’ Volleyball Championships, with the championship games to be held on Saturday, Nov. 4 at AHN Arena on the campus of Peters Township High School.
 
A total of 70 teams from the 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A classifications qualified for the WPIAL Girls’ Volleyball Championships. Postseason contests begin on Monday, Oct. 23 with pigtail-round games in Class 2A and Class 3A, followed by first-round contests on Tuesday, Oct. 24 in Class 1A and Class 4A. Teams qualify for the postseason by finishing inside the top four, including ties, of their respective sections following the regular season.
 
Every section in each classification had an outright champion. In Class 4A, North Allegheny (13-1, 8-0) and Penn-Trafford (11-3, 8-0) went unbeaten in Section I and Section III, respectively, while Canon-McMillan (13-3, 9-1) reigned Section II. Class 3A saw Hampton (18-0, 12-0) win Section I, Oakland Catholic (13-3, 11-1) capture Section II, Thomas Jefferson (15-1, 14-0) take home Section III, North Catholic (15-1, 12-0) top Section IV, and Armstrong (11-3, 11-1) claim Section V.
 
In Class 2A, Beaver (16-0, 14-0) collected the Section I plaque, Keystone Oaks (16-2, 13-1) was champion of Section II, Southmoreland (18-0, 16-0) topped Section III, Quaker Valley (14-2, 14-0) bested the Section IV field, and Freeport (17-1, 14-0) brought home Section V. Three section champions in Class 1A went unbeaten in section play with Frazier (16-1, 14-0) in Section II, Bishop Canevin (16-1, 12-0) in Section III, and Serra Catholic (16-0, 12-0) in Section IV, while Beaver County Christian (12-3, 10-2) emerged from Section I on top.
 
The top two teams in Class 4A, top three teams in Class 1A, and top four teams in Class 2A and Class 3A qualify for the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Girls’ Volleyball Championships, which will begin with first round matches on Tuesday, Nov. 7 and conclude at Cumberland Valley High School in Mechanicsburg on Saturday, Nov. 18.
 
The reigning WPIAL girls’ volleyball champions are Frazier in Class 1A, Freeport in Class 2A, North Catholic in Class 3A, and Pine-Richland in Class 4A. Frazier defeated Serra Catholic in three sets, Freeport bested Shenango in four frames, North Catholic was a four-set winner over South Fayette, and Pine-Richland emerged as champion in five sets against North Allegheny.
