Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) crowned its boys’ track & field team champions for the 2026 spring season this past Tuesday, May 5.
BOYS' CLASS 3A RECAP
Butler claimed the WPIAL boys’ track & field team championship by finishing the finals undefeated. The Golden Tornado secured the title with victories over Seneca Valley (76-74), Norwin (79-71), and Hempfield Area (98-52).
To reach the finals, Butler dominated its semifinal pod at home, defeating Mt. Lebanon (106-44), Knoch (116-34), and New Castle (124-16).
In the championship meet, Butler’s depth was on full display:
- Track Events: Kevin Shriver swept the 100-meter (10.97) and 200-meter (21.87) dashes. Carter Ekas won the 400-meter dash (49.29), while Landon Slear took first in the 800-meter run (1:58.48). Brendan Eicher provided a major points boost by winning both the 1,600-meter (4:23.27) and 3,200-meter (9:34.65) runs.
- Relays: The Golden Tornado captured wins in the 4x800-meter relay (7:50.90) and the 4x400-meter relay (3:22.40).
Norwin finished as the runner-up, having reached the finals after sweeping Canon-McMillan, Baldwin, and Uniontown in the semifinals. In the finals, the Knights defeated Seneca Valley (83-67) and Hempfield Area (101-49). They were led by Jeremiah Francis, who won the 110-meter hurdles (14.48) and the long jump (21-09.50).
Seneca Valley took third place with a 85-65 win over Hempfield Area. The Raiders advanced to the finals following a semifinal tie-breaker where they defeated Plum and Kiski Area.
BOYS' CLASS 2A RECAP
Quaker Valley extended its championship legacy, securing the WPIAL boys’ track & field team title with a sweep of its opponents in the finals. The Quakers defeated Greensburg Central Catholic (98-52), North Catholic (112-42), and Riverview (116-34).
The Quakers reached the finals after a perfect semifinal performance at home, where they defeated McGuffey, Chartiers-Houston, South Side, and Clairton.
In the championship meet, Quaker Valley showcased depth across both track and field:
- Track & Relays: The Quakers won the 4x800-meter relay (8:21.05) and the 4x400-meter relay (3:31.91). Jonah Montagnese won all three distance runs at the 800-meter run (2:03.78),1,600-meter run (4:26.79) and the 3,200-meter run (9:47.36).
- Field Events: The Quakers were dominant in the throws, with Tadhg Hamill winning the discus (120-10) and Nicholas Winnowski taking the javelin (148-06) and shot put (44-07.50).
Greensburg Central Catholic finished as the runner-up, securing wins over North Catholic (89-61) and Riverview (108-42). They reached the finals via a total-points tie-breaker (469-446) over Mohawk in the semifinals. Riverview took third place overall, having advanced to the finals after a razor-thin semifinal tie-breaker win over Waynesburg Central.
