WPIAL Reveals 2025 Baseball Championships presented by the Pittsburgh Pirates Brackets

North Allegheny (Class 6A), Pine-Richland (Class 5A), Indiana (Class 4A), Riverside (Class 3A), Neshannock (Class 2A), and Serra Catholic (Class 1A) are the top seeds in their respective brackets

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) established its brackets for the WPIAL/UPMC Sports Medicine Baseball Championships presented by the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday, with 80 teams qualifying across the six classifications. The brackets were announced exclusively on the WPIAL/KDKA Radio Selection Friday show beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
 
Teams competed in two sections in Class 6A, three sections in Class 1A, Class 2A, and Class 4A, and four sections in Class 3A and Class 5A. The top four teams in each section earned qualification into the WPIAL postseason.
 
The section champions in Class 6A were North Allegheny (13-6, 10-2) in Section I and Canon-McMillan (14-6, 9-3) in Section II. There were three outright section winners in Class 5A with Plum (18-2, 11-1) in Section I, Bethel Park (16-4, 9-3) in Section II, and Thomas Jefferson (14-4, 9-1) in Section IV, with Pine-Richland (17-3, 8-2) and Shaler (13-6, 8-2) splitting Section III. Class 4A saw one outright champion with Indiana (18-1, 10-0) in Section III, and two shared crowns by Beaver (11-8, 8-4) and Blackhawk (10-7, 8-4) in Section I, and Elizabeth Forward (13-3, 10-2) and West Mifflin (15-5, 10-2) in Section II.
 
Class 3A had outright section champions with Riverside (13-2, 9-1) in Section I, Avonworth (17-3, 9-1) in Section II, and Waynesburg Central (15-3, 11-1) in Section IV, along with a five-way tie in Section III between Burrell (12-8, 8-4), Deer Lakes (9-6, 8-4), Freeport (13-6, 8-4), Ligonier Valley (10-7, 8-4), and Mt. Pleasant (11-6, 8-4). There were two ties in Class 2A with Burgettstown (12-3, 10-2) and Fort Cherry (13-5, 10-2) sharing Section I, and Neshannock (15-4, 9-3) and Shenango (14-5, 9-3) splitting Section II, with Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (13-7, 11-1) winning Section III outright. In Class 1A, Greensburg Central Catholic (14-2, 11-1) took Section I, Leechburg (15-3, 14-0) went unbeaten in Section II, and Bishop Canevin (10-6, 8-2), Eden Christian Academy (13-4, 8-2), and Serra Catholic (17-3, 8-2) shared Section III.
 
In last season’s WPIAL Baseball Championships, there were two repeat champions with Bishop Canevin defeating Eden Christian Academy in Class 1A (10-3) and Seton LaSalle topping Serra Catholic in Class 2A (5-0). North Allegheny posted a no-hitter against Mt. Lebanon to win Class 6A (1-0), Penn-Trafford claimed its first WPIAL baseball title in Class 5A against Bethel Park (4-3), North Catholic defeated Indiana in Class 4A (7-5), and Avonworth used 14 innings to top Riverside in Class 3A (4-3, 14 inn.).
 
The WPIAL/UPMC Sports Medicine Baseball Championships presented by the Pittsburgh Pirates begin on Monday, May 12 with preliminary round games in Class 3A. Championship games will be held EQT Park (formerly Wild Things Park) on May 27-28, with a rain date available on Thursday, May 29. The WPIAL champion and additional teams will qualify for the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Baseball Championships, which begin with first round games on Monday, June 2 and conclude on June 12-13 with the championship games at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on the campus of Penn State University.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • 110: The number of seasons that the WPIAL has crowned a baseball champion. Allegheny was the first WPIAL baseball champion, capturing the crown in 1914. There were no champions crowned in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • 88: The number of schools who have boasted at least one WPIAL baseball champion.
  • 60: The number of teams in the 2025 fields that qualified for the WPIAL Baseball Championships last season.
  • 36: The number of schools who are seeking their first WPIAL baseball championship.   • 9: The number of WPIAL baseball championships won by North Allegheny, which is the league record. The Tigers were victorious in 1990, 1991, 1996, 2003, 2005, 2009, 2013, 2021, and 2024.
  • 5: The number of instances in which the WPIAL softball champion also won gold in baseball. The most recent school to do it was Union, who accomplished the feat in 2022. North Allegheny won both in 2003, and before that was Riverside in 1996 and Sto-Rox in 1985. Swissvale was the first to achieve the feat, sweeping the baseball and softball championships in 1980.
  • 6: The longest streak of consecutive WPIAL baseball championships, accomplished by Allegheny. After winning the first WPIAL baseball title in 1914, Allegheny rattled off six straight from 1917 to 1922.
  • 2: The number of consecutive years in which the Class 6A championship game had a no-hitter. Mt. Lebanon’s David Shields struck out nine, and allowed one walk and two hit-by-pitches in his 2023 gem, as the Blue Devils defeated North Allegheny, 4-0. One year later, North Allegheny’s David Posey posted 11 strikeouts against two walks, and two runners reaching via error and passed ball as the Tigers topped the Blue Devils, 1-0.
