WPIAL Reveals 2025 Boys’ Lacrosse Championships Brackets

Mt. Lebanon (Class 3A) and South Fayette (Class 2A) are the top seeds in their respective brackets

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) established its brackets for the WPIAL/UPMC Sports Medicine Boys’ Lacrosse Championships on Thursday, with 20 teams qualifying across the two classifications.
 
Teams competed in two different sections in both Class 2A and Class 3A, and faced each of their section opponents once. The top four teams in each Class 3A section and top six teams in each Class 2A section earned qualification into the WPIAL postseason.
 
The Class 3A section champions were Mt. Lebanon (12-4, 6-0) in Section I and a three-way tie between North Allegheny (9-8, 5-1), Pine-Richland (10-7, 5-1), and Shady Side Academy (10-7, 5-1) in Section II, while the Class 2A section champions were South Fayette (17-0, 11-0) in Section I and Mars (15-2, 10-0) in Section II.
 
Last season, Mt. Lebanon defended the Class 3A championship with a 15-10 win over North Allegheny, while Mars won its eighth consecutive Class 2A title with a 16-5 triumph versus South Fayette.
 
The WPIAL/UPMC Sports Medicine Boys’ Lacrosse Championships begin on Tuesday, May 13 with first round games in Class 2A. Championship games will be held at Upper St. Clair High School on May 21-22. The top three teams in both classifications will qualify for the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Boys’ Lacrosse Championships, which begin with first round games on Tuesday, June 3 and conclude on Saturday, June 14 with the championship games at Panzer Stadium on the campus of Penn State University.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • 16: The number of teams in the 2025 fields that qualified for the WPIAL Boys’ Lacrosse Championships last season.
  • 15: The number of seasons that the WPIAL has crowned a boys’ lacrosse champion. Hampton and Mt. Lebanon were the first in 2009, with the Talbots taking Division II and the Blue Devils winning Division I. There were no champions crowned in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • 12: The number of schools who have boasted at least one WPIAL boys’ lacrosse champion.
  • 11: The number of schools who are seeking their first WPIAL boys’ lacrosse championship. Those schools who would join the champion club are Bethel Park, Canon-McMillan, Central Catholic, Chartiers Valley, Fox Chapel, Franklin Regional, Indiana, Penn-Trafford, South Fayette, Shaler, and Upper St. Clair.
  • 8: The number of WPIAL boys’ lacrosse championships won by Mars, which is a league record. The Fightin’ Planets have won their titles consecutively, beginning with their first in 2016 with a 15-10 win over Hampton, followed by 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024.
  • 6: The number of years it has been since a first-time WPIAL boys’ lacrosse champion was crowned. Pine-Richland was the last, doing so at Class 3A in 2019 with a 12-5 win over Mt. Lebanon.
  • 5: The number of instances in which the WPIAL boys’ lacrosse champion also won gold in girls’ lacrosse. Mt. Lebanon and Mars both achieved this last season, sweeping both sport’s crowns. The Fightin’ Planets also accomplished this in 2021 and 2023, while Shady Side Academy won boys’ and girls’ titles in 2022.
  • 2: The number of teams that repeated as WPIAL boys’ lacrosse champions in 2024. Mt. Lebanon defended its Class 3A crown, while Mars made it eight in a row at Class 2A.
