Canonsburg, Pa. – The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) held its WPIAL/UPMC Sports Medicine Rifle Individual Championships at Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Sportsmen’s Club in Canonsburg on Thursday afternoon. The field featured 82 student-athletes from 12 different schools, and Butler’s Jackson Jungling came away with the WPIAL title after posting a final score of 200-20x with three center targets.
Jungling is Butler’s third WPIAL individual champion, but the first to win the outright gold. The Golden Tornado previously had co-champions in 2000 with Brandy Thompson and 2007 with Kayla Fry, with there also being four runners-up since Fry’s shared title. Jungling is the first WPIAL champion to post a 200-20x since West Greene’s Sheyann Watson did so in 2020.
For the second straight year, Hempfield Area’s Brooke Fanala was the silver medalist after registering a mark of 200-19x with seven center targets. Armstrong’s Riley Wasson rounded out the podium as the bronze medalist, narrowly behind Fanala’s total with a 2009-19x and six center targets.
The top 16 finishers qualified for state competition, with Jungling, Fanala, and Wasson joined by Butler’s Rachel Katsko (200-18x, 5 CT), Upper St. Clair’s Erin Shehab (200-18x, 4 CT), Mt. Lebanon’s Alexander Chadran (200-18x, 1 CT) and Whistle Foxbury (200-17x, 4 CT), Trinity’s Ryan Walther (200-17x, 3 CT) and Elizabeth Engle (200-17x, 1 CT), Upper St. Clair’s Ben Waldron (200-16x, 4 CT), Woodland Hills’ Anthony Nemanic (200-16x, 4 CT), Hempfield Area’s Aiden McVicker (200-16x, 2 CT), Trinity’s Meredith Ashby (200-16x, 1 CT), Waynesburg Central’s Emily Burnfield (200-16x, 1 CT), Penn-Trafford’s Emily Valenta (200-15x, 7 CT), and Butler’s Alyssa Miller (200-15x, 6 CT).
At the beginning of the awards ceremony, two student-athletes – Butler’s Jackson Jungling and Mt. Lebanon’s Alexander Chadran – were bestowed with the Dave Cramer Award for completing a perfect season in section matches.
