Shady Side Academy, Quaker Valley Win Gold at 2025 WPIAL Girls’ Tennis Team Championships

Shady Side Academy wins first title since 2012; Quaker Valley takes gold for the first time since 2010

Washington, Pa. – The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) crowned another set of team champions for the 2025-26 academic year at the WPIAL/UPMC Sports Medicine Girls’ Tennis Team Championships on Thursday, Oct. 15, at the Janet L. Swanson Tennis Center on the campus of Washington & Jefferson College.

Shady Side Academy won its first team title in 15 years with a 4-1 victory, marking the program’s first championship since 2010. The Bulldogs now have six team titles in their history, which ranks fifth all-time in WPIAL history.
Quaker Valley came out victorious in the team finals for the first time since 2012 with a 3-2 win. The Quakers now boast seven team championships, tied for fourth in WPIAL history.
 
CLASS 3A RECAP
Shady Side Academy (14-0, 7-0 Section IV) swept all three singles matches and split the doubles flights to claim the championship.

In singles play, Merriwether McCargo opened with a tightly contested win over Bethel Park’s Cami Fisher (14-0, 8-0 Section IV), finishing 6-7, 6-4. On the second flight, Bulldogs sophomore Cassie Lapina defeated Makenzie Smock, 6-4, 6-3. In the final singles match, Shady Side’s Brooke Henderson rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Hadley Murello, giving the Bulldogs a commanding lead.

In doubles, Bethel Park struck first in the top flight, as Keira Ross and Cassie Sienka bounced back from a first-set loss to win 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. However, Shady Side secured the overall victory in the second doubles match, with Elaina Rubinov and Elizabeth Butena dominating in a 6-0, 6-1 win, sealing the 4-1 team result.
In the third-place consolation match at Shady Side Academy, North Allegheny edged out reigning 3A champion Mt. Lebanon, 3-2, to clinch the final PIAA tournament berth.
Shady Side Academy reached the championship match with a 5-0 win over 16th-seeded Thomas Jefferson, a 4-1 victory over ninth-seeded Pine-Richland, and another 4-1 win over fourth-seeded Mt. Lebanon.
 
CLASS 2A RECAP
Quaker Valley (9-1, 6-0 Section V) began the day with a singles win over North Catholic (10-2, 6-0 Section III), as 2A Singles runner-up Avery Allan defeated Evelyn Marche, 6-1, 6-1. North Catholic answered back in the second singles match, with sophomore Macaria Stall defeating Quakers senior Livia Jobbins, 6-0, 6-4. In the final singles contest, freshman Anna Ravotti came up big for North Catholic with a 6-3, 6-4 win to give her team a 2-1 lead.

In doubles, Quaker Valley dominated. The team of Jane Lenhard and Kate Miller rallied to beat North Catholic, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2, tying the match at 2-2. In the decisive final doubles match, Quakers juniors Lily McClain and Chloe Zelmore took care of Kaitlyn Abel and Claire Elliott, 6-0, 6-3, securing the 3-2 overall win.

In the third-place consolation match at Sewickley Academy, sixth-seeded Winchester Thurston (9-1, 6-1 Section II) defeated fourth-seeded Oakland Catholic, 4-1, to claim the final PIAA qualifier slot.
Quaker Valley began its WPIAL championship run with a first-round bye, followed by a 4-1 win over eighth-seeded Mt. Pleasant and a 4-1 victory against fourth-seeded Oakland Catholic.
