A 1987 graduate of Mt. Lebanon, Kurt Angle is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished wrestlers in Pennsylvania and international history. At Mt. Lebanon High School, he won the 1987 Pennsylvania state wrestling championship and also captured a state title in football. Over three varsity wrestling seasons, he compiled a dominant 90–8 record and earned all-state honors in football as well. Angle continued his wrestling career at Clarion University of Pennsylvania, where he became one of the most decorated amateur wrestlers in NCAA history, earning two NCAA Division I national championships, a national runner-up finish in 1991, and three NCAA Division I All-American honors. On the international stage, Angle claimed the 1987 USA Junior Freestyle championship, was a two-time USA Senior Freestyle champion, and won the 1988 FILA Junior World Freestyle championship. His career reached its pinnacle at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, where he won the gold medal in freestyle wrestling, becoming the only WPIAL wrestler ever to achieve Olympic gold. Following his amateur career, Angle transitioned to professional wrestling, where he became a global superstar in WWE, winning multiple world championships, headlining WrestleMania events, and earning induction into the WWE Hall of Fame. Angle is celebrated not only for his unprecedented success across high school, collegiate, and international wrestling, but also for his impact on professional wrestling, where he is widely recognized as one of the most successful amateur wrestlers to compete in the sport and a pioneer in bringing legitimate wrestling skill to the entertainment stage.
