The most accomplished team in program history, Mt. Lebanon captured both the WPIAL and PIAA State Championships and became the first WPIAL program to win a PIAA soccer state title. At the time, only one state champion was crowned, as all teams competed in a single classification, making qualification for the state tournament extremely difficult, with only two WPIAL teams advancing in the early years. Mt. Lebanon finished the season with a brilliant 30-1-2 overall record, reeling off a 29-game unbeaten streak after its lone loss in a preseason tournament and later avenging that defeat by beating ELCO in a state final rematch. The Blue Devils posted a 13-0-1 league record to win the section and earned the WPIAL crown with victories over Norwin (2-1 OT), Springdale (2-1), and Upper St. Clair in the championship match, 4-1. An astounding 16 players from the 25-man roster went on to play collegiately, led by team MVP Mark DuMars (23 goals, 28 assists), Parade All-American Rob Wilcher, and Dave Torris, the second player ever drafted by the MISL from the WPIAL. Coached by legendary head coach John Wilcher, the team capped years of excellence with the first state soccer championship in Mt. Lebanon and WPIAL history.
