James “Jim” Conklin stands as one of the most remarkable figures in the history of Pennsylvania high school wrestling, setting a standard of excellence that has endured for generations. A 1943 graduate at Waynesburg High School, Conklin became the first Pennsylvania wrestler to win four PIAA state championships, capturing titles in four consecutive seasons from 1939 to 1943 at four different weight classes ranging from 85 to 120 pounds. He compiled an extraordinary 70-0-1 record during his high school career, with his only draw coming during his freshman season, captained the Waynesburg squad as a senior, and won all but one match by fall. Following his prep career, Conklin served his country as a navigator in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. He later resumed his wrestling career at Indiana University, where he won all but one match in each of two seasons, before continuing his academic and athletic pursuits at the University of Pittsburgh Medical School. Competing for Pitt’s newly formed wrestling program from 1949 to 1951, Conklin lost only one dual match in each season, served as team captain, and was named an “Ideal Squad Member” by his teammates. Across eight years of high school and collegiate competition, he lost only four dual matches, a testament to his consistency and dominance. His extraordinary career has been recognized with induction into the Western Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania Wrestling Halls of Fame, and he became the first recipient of the Outstanding Pennsylvania Award to be inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
