For more than three decades, Tim McConnell established himself as one of the most accomplished and influential coaches in WPIAL basketball history, building championship programs with both the Chartiers Valley boys and girls teams. Over the course of his career, McConnell captured nine WPIAL championships overall, including six titles with the Chartiers Valley boys program—tied for the sixth-most in league history—and three WPIAL championships with the Chartiers Valley girls. His success at the state level was highlighted by a PIAA championship during a perfect 31-0 season with the Chartiers Valley girls. McConnell’s teams were consistently among the elite, as he won an extraordinary 24 section championships in 30 seasons as a head coach, including 19 section titles with the Chartiers Valley boys, four with the Chartiers Valley girls, and one during his lone season at Bishop Canevin. He compiled a remarkable 684-160 career record, good for an .810 winning percentage, and became the fastest coach in WPIAL boys basketball history to reach 500 career victories. Renowned for player development, McConnell coached three 2,000-point scorers—the most in WPIAL history—along with 16 boys and three girls who surpassed the 1,000-point mark. His excellence on the sidelines was recognized with Post-Gazette Coach of the Year honors three times, earning the award twice for boys basketball and once for girls.
