A 1977 graduate of Southmoreland, Russ Grimm was a three-sport athlete and served as the Scotties quarterback, linebacker, and punter before moving to the offensive line for his collegiate and professional career. Grimm competed for the Southmoreland football, basketball, and track & field teams, earning a total of nine varsity letters, and had the school’s football field named in his honor in 2006. Following graduation, he stayed home to play football at the University of Pittsburgh, beginning as a linebacker before starting his Hall of Fame offensive line career. Grimm was the starting center for the 1979 and 1980 Panthers teams that posted a record of 22-2 and claimed Fiesta and Gator Bowl wins. He was then selected in the third round of the 1981 NFL Draft by Washington, and helped found the franchise’s renowned “Hogs” offensive line with Jeff Bostic, Mark May, George Starke, and Joe Jacoby. An 1980s All-Decade Team selection, Grimm enjoyed an 11-year NFL playing career, earning four Pro Bowl and four All-Pro nods, and helped lead Washington to Super Bowl victories in 1983, 1988, and 1992. After his playing career, Grimm spent 26 seasons as an assistant coach with Washington, Pittsburgh Steelers, Arizona Cardinals, and Tennessee Titans - primarily coaching offensive lines - and won his fourth Super Bowl ring in 2006 as the Steelers offensive line coach. Grimm has been inducted into many Halls of Fame, including the Western Pennsylvania Sports in 1999, the Pro Football in 2010, the Pitt Athletics in 2022, and the Pennsylvania Sports in 2023.
