The Peters Township Class of 1990 completed one of the most successful four-year runs in WPIAL boys’ soccer history in the fall of 1989, repeating as the WPIAL and PIAA champions in Class 2A. Led by head coach Jerry Luxbacher, the Indians finished the season with a 23-2-2 record, successfully defending their 1988 league title with a 1-0 win over Quaker Valley in the WPIAL Championship Game, and their state crown with a 0-0 draw versus Great Valley. Peters Township allowed just 19 goals over the course of the season and posted 15 shutouts, and in the WPIAL and PIAA tournaments, it outscored its opponents by a 23-0 margin. The senior class finished its four-year career with an overall record of 82-16-7, winning WPIAL championships in all four seasons as well as claiming a pair of PIAA third-place finishes in 1986 and 1987. Kevin Shaeffer was an All-State selection for the Indians, and classmate Bob Dyer now has four WPIAL titles and two PIAA championships to his name as Peters Township’s current boys’ soccer coach. Nine of the players went on to play collegiately – Bob Dyer (University of Pittsburgh), Ryan Fender (Community College of Allegheny County, Purdue University), Rick Ferrari (John Carroll University), Matt Francesconi (University of Pittsburgh, Slippery Rock University), Nick Gismondi (Air Force Academy), Rich Haller (Washington & Jefferson College), Neil Ivy (Kenyon College), John Lopus (University of Pittsburgh), and Kevin Shaeffer (Naval Academy). The 1989 Peters Township boys’ soccer team is the most recent to win four consecutive WPIAL championships, and joins South Fayette and Springdale as the only schools to do so.
