Before becoming one of college basketball’s most efficient 3-point shooters, Micah Mason set a WPIAL record from beyond the arc. The high-scoring 2012 Highlands graduate made 346 3-pointers in his high school career, which was the most in WPIAL history, breaking a previous record held by T.J. McConnell. When Mason graduated, he ranked 12th all-time among WPIAL scorers with 2,272 career points. The 6-foot-2 guard was the WPIAL’s leading scorer in consecutive seasons, averaging 33.3 points per game as a junior and 28.7 as a senior. He was named first-team, all-state each year, and also earned spots both seasons on the Tribune-Review’s Terrific 10 and the Post-Gazette’s Fab 5. Mason’s greatest single game was a 64-point effort his junior year, a total that ranked second-most in WPIAL history. Nobody else had scored as many points in a WPIAL game since the 1950s (Mohawk’s Larry Hardesty had 71 points in 1959). Mason went 17-for-19 shooting from the field that day, including 7-for-7 from 3-point range, an early indication of his efficiency. In college, Mason ranked as the sixth-best 3-point shooter in NCAA history at 46.3%. He made 311 of his 671 attempts in his four seasons, one at Drake and three at Duquesne. Mason finished his college career with 1,431 points, including 1,269 at Duquesne. He was named third team All-Atlantic 10 as a senior. His 45.8% rate from 3-point range in three seasons at Duquesne ranked as the best in Atlantic 10 Conference history (271-of-592). He led the nation in 3-point shooting percentage in his sophomore season with the Dukes, making 56% of his attempts – the best percentage by any NCAA shooter in decades. It tied for the ninth-best, single-season mark in NCAA history. Mason made five or more threes in a college game 17 times. He ranked second in Duquesne history in free throw percentage (85.4%).
